Café Strata I will not be returning to Cafe Strata again. There were 4 other customers and I had to wait 45 minutes for my food. I ended up having to get it takeaway as I didn't have all day to wait. When I asked for it to be takeaway the girl at the counter had a sour look on her face and rudely asked why. I didn't think I had to explain myself so got rather annoyed. I had to leave as I was going to a funeral and didn't really want to tell the girl this.
The girl just grunted when she gave me my food. The food was cold. Tasted fine once reheated but was still disappointed. The cafe was a mess and the staff were all very loud talking about crude things.
I will never be returning.Review by Pissed Off, 20 July 2010.

Other Reviews for Café Strata
cafe-surfer, 1 June 2010 (1.5 stars). We walked into this cafe in the Anglesea St Medical buildings complex to grab a pie and a drink. We only did this because the other cafe around the corner whose name escapes me was serving dried up and horrible, unappetising food in its display cabinets. In contrast Cafe Strata does have very nice and inviting looking food. We grabbed two pies and a couple of drinks and then went to the counter. My mouth nearly dropped when I was told the cost...$18.40!!!! For just these!
I was gob smacked. This is one incredibly expensive cafe.
The pies were ok but the service could be improved. The pies were put into stock standard brown paper bags which leaked the grease of the pies through it and the pies fell apart when you ate them. They tasted very nice but they were a tad stressful to eat! I was really rather disgusted with the prices and all I can do is simply not go there again. Definitely not a place to go for a quick cheap snack!
| | Jim, 23 March 2010 (5 stars). We have found them to be first class and the food was well worth the wait. Have never had any problems with the food or the service. | Jules and Tina, 17 March 2010 (4.5 stars). We have tried lots of cafes this year. This is still the best place to eat.
Would like to see some change to the menu, but other than that fantastic. | Sharon, 16 February 2010 ( stars). Very disappointed with staff and food. We have been going there for a long time and always on a Saturday. We have noticed that the staff have become very miserable and not friendly at all. When placing our order we were told that there was a 15 minute wait. Well after an hour and fifteen minutes our food arrived and the order was incorrect so I had to wait for another 10 minutes for the correct order and by then my toast was cold as well. I was not given a knife and fork and had to wait for that as well. Will definitely not go back there in a hurry. Not even an apology from the staff.
| | Anonymous, 2 August 2009 (5 stars). Cafe Strata is awesome the staff are always friendly and the food and coffee are excellent. Definitely would go back. | Jules and Tina, 8 March 2009 (5 stars). We are regular patrons of Cafe Strata. Over the last 4-5 years they have proven very good. Their food is always great and good value. The service is great (except when new people have started and are not quite up to Strata's standards yet).
I have been there for dinner once and the garlic bread was awesome (never had better). The dinner was just beautiful, but I did not have enough room for dessert.
| Mermaid, 16 January 2008 (4 stars). I went to Strata Cafe with about 25 others for a Christmas breakfast just before Christmas. There was another big group there and it looked like it's a popular place. We pre-ordered our breakfast so food come out the time they said it would. I must say I am really impressed by the quality and quantity of the food. I had the French toast. It was very yummy and it was SOOOO big. I would say it's twice as big as a same value French toast you can get in other cafes. Many of my colleagues had the Big Breakfast. It's HUGE. Good quality bacon, sausages, 2 nice hash browns, toast, real grilled tomatoes and 2 eggs done in your preferred way... and it's only $14.50.
It's really a place that is over-looked. Will definitely go back! | Jules and Tina, 15 September 2007 (5 stars). THIS PLACE IS AWESOME!
The service is great (nobody's perfect obviously) but we always get great service. The owners are real friendly and greet many a customer by their name due to lots of people being regulars!
They have a great selection of food, and frequently add in some new options for a change. Some of our favourites would have to be the tandoori chicken wrap, the omelette stack, chicken fettuccine and of course the Strata big breakfast, which is a Hamilton legend that can satisfy some of the biggest appetites, we normally share one :) They also have quite a few gluten-free options.
As for some of the previous comments made by others, well, the portions are fine (probably the correct amount you should eat :)) and you get what you pay for so I'd rather have quality over quantity which Cafe Strata has.
The only thing I would have to say is not good about Cafe Strata is that IT'S NOT BIG ENOUGH! They are always packed at lunchtimes which shows their popularity, so would suggest maybe a second level on the building and underground parking! | | Gary, 2 April 2007 (3 stars). The food is nice and of good quality but well over priced for the portion, they need to review this. Service is a little slow and orders sometimes incorrect, however staff are very friendly. OK but wouldn't rush back in a hurry. | | Don, 21 November 2006 (5 stars). We travel over to Hamilton from Whakatane quite often for business or to meet up with friends and always suggest that we meet at Cafe Strata. The staff are always very friendly and the service great. They do get very busy which is a sign of a popular cafe. The food and coffee has always been of a very high standard - that is why so many people keep on returning. If we do not meet there we always make sure that we have at least a coffee before heading home to set us up for the trip. A big tick from Whakatane for a very nice cafe, keep up the good work. | | Ray & Gail, 10 October 2006 (5 stars). I can't resist the "big breakfest" lots of great food for a reasonable price. They should charge more for what you get. We always plan our trips to Hamilton to include a stop at Strata for a bite. AAA+++ | Sarah, 20 May 2006 (5 stars). Cafe Strata is FANTASTIC!!!!
I have been going there since the place first opened a few years ago. The food is delicious, and the fact that you don't have to pay through the roof for a meal makes the experience even better. The staff there are very friendly, they are a close knit bunch (family business).
I have never heard anyone say anything negative about Cafe Strata :)
| Slickaz, 4 May 2006 (2 stars). Strata has good food, but very poor service. I try to take my fiance there every Saturday for breakfast and every time I notice the staff seem moody and don't seem approachable. I once asked a waitress there for a glass of water and was told to go get it myself, which as such is very poor service.
If you want culinary bliss, their food does it perfectly, but service could be improved.
Unfortunately, the service has cost them the business of many of my friends and family and acquaintances. I would recommend them if you only want good food and don't bother about service. | John/Dianne/Donna, 2 May 2006 (5 stars). CAFE STRATA HAS MOVED FROM THIS LOCATION.

It was so good and reasonably priced. It's so good to get a chicken panini which is stuffed full of goodies. It's the best I've had around town. I was impressed with the friendly atmosphere, it's cosy and welcoming.
| | Donnandy, 19 August 2004 (5 stars). I recently had a 21st function which Cafe Strata catered for. Everything was just perfect. All food was professionally presented, hot dishes were hot and cold were cold. There was so much food there was some left over which was real value for money considering the quality. I recomend Cafe Strata to anyone wanting catering for anything, even weddings. | Bekah, 18 August 2002 (5 stars). Very impressed with the food. It came fast and we had a great selection. The coffee was good and I will return there again on my next lunching experience.
| Bridget, 12 June 2002 (3.5 stars). Hey, hey you you get offa my cloud Hot air ballooning is what it’s all about. At least one gets that impression on entering Café Strata in Casabella Lane. Where Quattro used to be, and just across the alley from Espressolab; Strata is a vibrant place with simple stylish food and well-made coffee. We joined the rats for a lunch midweek. The food is on display in the front counter and described on the blackboard. Largely pre-prepared; the meals come heated and served with a small amount of green leaf salad and tasty pickle. Among the options today were Thai fish cakes, smoked chicken and apricot wrap, potato and kumara cake with smoked salmon and blue cheese, various paninis, lasagne, cakes and sweets. They have a good list of gluten- and wheat-free items (sausage rolls, paninis, sammies, cakes and muffins). With our chicken wrap (and our potato kumara cake (both $7.50) we had a mocha ($3) and a berry smoothie ($4) made with yoghurt (can also be made with ice-cream). The food was delivered reasonably promptly and was perfect for lunch. Well presented with simple salad and colourful pickle. Tasty. The wrap was laden with chicken and the potato cake was aromatic with salmon and blue cheese. The berry smoothie was fruity but a bit sour – we did go for the yoghurt. The mocha was good…strongly flavoured with coffee and chocolate. The walls are well decorated with laminated pictures of hot-air balloons in action. These are lovely…especially the ones which purport to show Hamilton’s balloon fest as warm and sunny. Trick photography that! They have done well with the theme – providing an attractive look. Perhaps a bit more could’ve been done to reduce the intrinsic squareness of the room…some balloon-type fabric covering the cheap ceiling perhaps? But pleasant and interesting nonetheless. Was more of a pity that the microwave interfered with the stereo - the buzz became rather annoying when sitting underneath the speaker. Strata provides a similar lunchtime experience to say Traffic or Brazil. Appetising pre-prepared food served stylishly with salad and pickle. You can see what you’re about to eat, the prices are reasonable and it doesn’t take all day. Back to the shopping! Overall: Another recommended lunchtime retreat from work or shopping. Quick, simple, tasty, and relaxing. And the coffee is pretty respectable.
