Little India I had the opportunity to revisit this restaurant after a six year hiatus. I think they must have improved the acoustics or it was a quiet night. The meals were as always quite superb in taste. The naans appear to have shrunk in size however, and when you order different naans they are all lumped in the plate and you have to figure out for yourself which one was which.
Service remains relatively forgettable. The waitresses are very indifferent or appear somewhat aloof. There is a little bit of feeling or a slight hint of friendliness there usually when you go to pay but overall a positively "neutral" experience!
The gem of the night if you can call it that was when one of our party tried to order a coffee and the waitress exclaimed ..."Oh i don't know how to make coffee!" ...so what was she doing working in a restaurant that offers it on its menu?!! Anyway at least the food was good....

Other Reviews for Little India
| Anonymous, 6 February 2008 (1 stars). I have on many occasions had quite different experience from the staff at this restaurant. On numerous occasions they have been quite rude and arrogant in many ways. I went back there for good food earlier, but now there are lots of other good options, ie other Indian restaurants... I WILL NOT BE GOING TO THIS RESTAURANT EVER AGAIN. MY FRIENDS AND I WILL NOT EVER GO TO ANY LITTLE INDIA BRANCH. If I am spending my money, I would rather get good food and good service... | | Chris, 16 August 2005 (4.5 stars). I really don't understand why everyone complains about the noise. Have any of you ever been to India? Go to India and try and find a quiet place in the city - you'll struggle. India is a bustling place, and Little India reproduces the exact same kind of atmosphere. I highly recommend it!! | | Tommy, 6 August 2005 (5 stars). My partner and I are regular diners at Little India and give full marks for the friendly well presented staff there. I am really impressed with the multi-cultural staff and how they remember my name even if I haven't been there for months on end. The manager is so great in his greetings to me and even when he hasn't seen me in a while and he always remembers my name. The meals are cooked superbly and I recommend the tandoori prawns as an entree... beautiful... I have read the other remarks and totally disagree with their whinges... eg noisey, not good for romantic dinners... load of crap... the only place in Hamilton for excellent service is definitely Little India. At the end of our dinner the manager has quite often bought us a small sherry to wind up our evening. I fully recommend this restaurant to all my customers and friends and family. Again the takeaways are as excellent as sitting in the restaurant. We have been to plenty of restaurants and have not found the staff as well presented as Little India, especially in 'peak hour'. The waiters/waitresses do not stress like other restaurants. | Jim and Brenda, 16 July 2005 (5 stars). We always loved Indian food but Little India does it better than anywhere else we've been to. It's our favourite restaurant of any type. Best mouthwatering Indian meals we've had in NZ -- or elsewhere for that matter. The various starters such as the kebabs and chooza tikka etc are to die for. Favourite starter is tandoori mushrooms and favourite mains kadai chicken. They are out of this world -- delicious every time. Staff and service are tops. Prices extremely reasonable. And if you like quality Indian food this is as good as it gets. We would recommend Little India to anyone - including our extremely demanding friends from abroad. It's brilliant.

It's for that reason I do not go there very often. I have difficulty hearing in the din. The service is OK but I agree with the main reviewer...sometimes it seems just a little sanitised or without feeling. | Peter, 29 November 2001 (4.5 stars). I have been a regular diner at the Little India Bistro and Tandoor for the past two years. Over this time I would estimate that I have tried most of the dishes available on their menu and I have yet to be disappointed with my choices. Not only is the food fantastic in flavour and consistiency. I have found the standard has remained consistantly high over this period.
Management and staff are always very friendly, staff turnover appears to be very low, as I see the same smiling faces each time. This indidcates to me that the staff are happy and makes for a 'tight team'. Service is generally very good on the whole. Although a slightly longer wait is not unusual on Friday's and Saturday's (when take out orders appear to be at their highest).
The only place the Little India falls down is the actual dinning room. It is always clean and pleasantly presented. However it can become extemely noisy on busy nights. This generally doesn't bother me personally, but if you're looking for intimacy, look elsewhere, or alternatively you could go there for a quiet lunch or grab a take out instead.
Incidentally, take away meals are just as good and seem to be larger than the house portions. At 10% discount on take out orders over fifteen bucks, you can't go wrong.
Despite the occasional noisy evening, ittle India rates very highy with me. I believe (when you take into account the food, price and service) it is one of the top resturaunts in the city.
Highly recommended!! | | Anonymous, 8 November 2001 (2.5 stars). Indian chain restaurant - Great food, bad acoustics. | Bridget, 29 October 2001 (3 stars). Much of India, Little of Interest Little India is probably the most well known Indian restaurant in Hamilton. It serves good food consistently, has ok service and is well priced. It’s fortunate that it provides takeaways as the atmosphere (and the acoustics) are rather lacking. To me it always seems like a big echoey warehouse with about as much appeal. A lovely orange and green warehouse maybe, but still a warehouse. Personally, I would rather enjoy their delicious cuisine at home. Four of us went there for a birthday dinner on a Monday and we were the 2nd birthday group there. Thankfully the other group was the only one singing. Between us we ordered mains only, 4 dishes ($13.50-$16.90) with garlic naan bread ($3), rice and raita ($2). We had murg mumtaz (aka butter chicken), which is always a favourite, kadai chicken, lamb pasanda and malai kofta. I like the kadai chicken as it comes with a thicker sauce, much easier for eating with fingers and naan bread for us piggy ones. As always the food was spicy, aromatic and tasty and comes at whatever temperature you like it (mild, medium, hot or extremely hot). I get raita as I like to cover my curry in yoghurt. I’m a sook when it comes to hot. Their menu is extensive with myriad seafood, meat, chicken and vegetarian alternatives. I’ve never managed to have a starter yet with the mains usually proving to be more than enough. They have BYOW ($2/bottle corkage). They do takeaways with a 10% discount on pick-up orders over $15. They don’t take cheques. I get bored dining at Little India as it has little to offer apart from the food. The service is good, but indifferent, and as a complete dining experience I find it rather unrewarding. I think their food is great – lucky for me it tastes just as good when I eat it at home. Overall: Take their delicious takeaways home
