Shinjuku Japanese Restaurant  I walk past this little restaurant everyday and it never seems to be busy. Neither was it busy last Saturday night when I dined with my husband, sister-in-law and her husband. We were all pleasantly surprised at the level of service and the quality of the food. I have dined at many Japanese restaurants in Sydney and this compared very favourably. My family have visited Japan and were also pleased with the quality of this little gem. We all had starters, and my family had tepanyaki while I ordered a combination of tempura and sashimi which was fabulous. We all agreed we will back again and again.

The only thing I would not recommend is the "opening flower" chrysanthemum tea which hasn't got much taste and is a little on the expensive side. I am always amazed to find Shinjuku fairly quiet - the standard of the food, the choice of wines and beers, the simple but comfortable and relaxing set-up suggest it should be full every night. However this is of course to the advantage of those lucky enough to experience this hidden gem - minimal time to wait for meals and service. It's on Alexandra St, opp. Little India and the Outback.
The sushi here is exceptional and you can sit at the bar and watch Chef Jason prepare it in front of you. I am a huge sushi and sashimi fan and I have not had better anywhere in Australia or New Zealand.
The lunch boxes are awesome - a meal and a half and great variety and choice.
Beyond the excellent food what has made Shinjuku my equal favourite restaurant in Hamilton (Palate is the other fyi) is very friendly and warm service. Jason is a lovely guy and the girls are attentive and smiling.
I could not recommend this place more - try it for yourself and you will discover a new regular where the simple things that so many eateries seem to disregard are here done exceptionally well. | | raj, 11 August 2006 (5 stars).
