Tandoor - A Taste of Pakistan

The reviews of this restaurant were interesting as generally I would not agree with them but then they pertain to small groups of two perhaps. We went in as a larger group (~ 10) and we had booked but disappointingly the service we experienced was not up to standard. The biggest sticking point is that we had to wait over one hour to get anything to eat. We felt very annoyed at this. The food was OK, but it was not generously portioned for the price. At the end because we were an organisation and didn't have a credit card, we asked if it were appropriate to pay by cheque which they said was OK but then there was a bit of a fuss about it..understandable I expect given the risk with cheques but then it tended to put a damper on our evening. I would not return to this restaurant.

Sunila, 27 August 2008 ( stars). WOWWOWOWOWOW AMAZING FOOD. As another poster said, most hindu's don't eat meat, they're vegetarian, so most 'Indian' restaurants are actually Pakistani, and run by Pakistani's. This is amazing food! Go and try it!!!
Graeme, 10 April 2007 (5 stars). Great food and service, the butter chicken (which wasn't on the menu before) is the best I've ever had. Yeah and that mango lassi is the best.
Sarah, 6 July 2006 (2 stars). I went there with 10+ people...we waited for more than 1 hour and the food was delivered in the wrong order...it was horrible that we had to look for what was supposed to be our own dish. Well...the food was ok. I don't think I will go there ever again.
Poolgirl, 15 July 2003 (5 stars). Excellent! All the flavour and taste of Indian, without all the cream. You must try the Paratha bread. Delicious. And I agree with Bridget, the Mango Lassi is the best in town by far. I suggest you try the menu items you wouldn't normally find on an Indian menu (Bridget picked the only 2 items with bone I believe). The beef and lamb is really tender too. Remember Hindu's don't eat meat so a lot of dishes we think of as Indian are actually Pakistani anyway!

Bridget, 17 July 2002 (3.5 stars). Tuck Into Tandoor
Tandoor is a Pakistani restaurant on the corner of Te Aroha and Grey Streets, where Osciane used to be. I always thought it was a strange place for a restaurant, but in terms of parking convenience it’s fantastic. There’s even a wine shop nearby for BYO essentials. I went there with friends and a reluctant 40-something birthday boy for dinner on Friday night.
Tandoor is pretty easy to spot with the whole frontage rimmed in moving lights. The walls inside are painted concrete with the main room in burnt orange and the reception area in a rich aqua. Softening the squareness, bright rugs make effective wall ornaments, along with brass touches. The service was friendly and personable, our waitress and her father (I presume) both showing good attention to our welfare. The table was pre-prepared and water was delivered soon after we sat down.
We perused the menu which to me had both similarities and differences to Indian food. I have heard that Pakistani food is more Middle Eastern than Indian though that is hard to tell from just reading the menu. Balti appears, as does Korma and Vindaloo. Naan bread and Lassi drinks are also on the menu. I’m such an Indie philistine. Andy, where are you? From the extensive selection of beef, lamb, chicken, fish and vegetarian mains available (priced between $11.90 and $16.90), we eventually settled on a Murg Balti (chicken in a thick gravy or tomatoes, onions, coriander, ginger and garlic; $15.50), Murg Badami Korma (chicken in cream with nuts, saffron and whole spices; $16.90) and Murg Palak (chicken cooked in spinach with tomatoes, onions, garlic and spices; $16.90). To accompany I had a garlic naan ($3), some raita (yoghurt with coriander, tomato, cucumber; $3.50) in case the heat got overboard and a mango lassi ($3.50). All mains come with rice and in a heat scale of mild, medium or hot.
My mango lassi appeared first and this was superb. Possibly the best I’ve had in town. Not too sweet. Not too thick. Just great. The food was served not long after in lovely silver and brass bowls. I thought the food lovely with thick gravy; all the better to scoop with the naan. The medium level of hot for me was still a bit too lip-numbing for me to really appreciate the fresh spicy flavours. What can I say, I’m a wuss. Raita drowning coming up. The other meals were tasty although served in the traditional style with bone still in the meat, which made chewing a bit more of an adventure. We all thought the medium level of hot a bit high on the scale. The food was served in generous servings and I was able to take most of mine home for lunch the next day.
Overall I found the Pakistani style of food at Tandoor rather similar to Indian food I’ve had in Hamilton. To me the differences between the Southern Indian style of Satya and the “usual” Hamilton Indian were far greater. But for all that I am obviously not a subtle connoisseur of Indian (or Pakistani) food, I thought it lovely here. The food was well prepared and presented, and tasty beyond the hot. The service was great and the value pretty good. Politically correct it may not be, but if you like Indian food you should also like Tandoor.
Overall: A nice change of surrounds for Indian cuisine aficionados
