Thai Village Café

I was very upset and disappointed with my dining experience at Thai Village, Hood Street. Our group of 24 arrived at 7.00pm to a very quiet Thai Village. We ordered our meals at 7.10pm and did not receive them till 8.30pm! During this time people who had arrived after us ordered, received their food and drinks and had already left before we even received our meals although we had arrived and ordered before them. When I approached the bar to order a drink I was told we do not serve drinks over the bar you must order them from your waiter/waitress. Why do they have a bar if you cannot order here?! I asked our waiter at 7.50pm how long our meals would be. He replied "10-15 minutes". When 8.20pm rolled around and our meals were still not being served I approached the manager to ask him how long the meals would be. He informed me that they were very busy tonight with over 70 diners and our meals would come when they come. At no point did the manager attempt to apologise for the bad service and the long wait he had also taken a condescending tone and ended our conversation by telling me "to go and sit back down and just relax". How the hell am I supposed to relax when I am starving and am running late for other plans? Our meals arrived at 8.30pm and we had to eat them within 5 minutes to meet our appointment. I understand that they are a busy restaurant but we were among the first diners to arrive and order. We were a large party of paying customers and I totally think they should review the way their restaurant prioritises things.

Other Reviews for Thai Village Café

Dave, 31 March 2007 (4.5 stars). We go there about once a month on average. We really like the food, particularly the soups (their medium-hot Tom Khaa Gai soup is out of this world!!) but many of their other dishes are also excellent. As someone who knows Thailand well I can confirm that most of their dishes are authentic and as good as you would eat in Bangkok, Pattaya or Chiangmai. This is a family-owned restaurant where they try really hard and do most things well. The staff are efficient, friendly and courteous and the atmosphere is great. Quite often when other nearby restaurants are sparsely patronised or empty, the Thai Village is bursting at the seams with happy patrons. I strongly recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys really good Thai food and an enjoyable dining experience.

We ambled into Thai Village after having been across the road at Hamilton Wine Company sampling (far too many?) Kemblefield wines. Respect to Thai Village for being willing to serve dinner at 8:45 pm. The place was still buzzing with a large group surrounded by lots of half-empty bottles and a few other tables. We sat by the window.
Service was fast and efficient. As one might expect at this time of night. The menu is extensive with soups, entrees, spicy salads, mains of: meat and vegetables, curries, rice & noodles, and seafood. Prices for mains are between $16 and $21 with the seafood dishes slightly higher. All mains have grades of hotness and come with jasmine rice. There is also a banquet menu for $32 pp (minimum of 4) which includes 3 entrees, 5 mains, fresh fruit dessert and tea or coffee. There were only two of us. We sifted gainfully through the menu with neurons firing intermittently and slightly blurry vision. Pity we hadn’t actually bought any Kemblefield to help us along (corkage $3).
I love Thai soups so I started with one of those. Tom Kha Talay ($9.50), which for those of us less well versed in Thai, is a seafood soup in coconut milk. We also shared the Golden Bags ($8.50) as an entrée (kind of like Thai chicken wontons). The soup was great. Laden with seafood chunks, tasty and complex while the wontons were just that. Crunchy and flavoursome with some sort of clear sweet dipping sauce. Nice. For the mains, Maverick chose Pad Prik Khing (stir fried pork in red curry paste with green beans, carrot and kaffir lime leaves; $19) while I had Pad Khing Sod (stir-fried ginger, garlic, chicken and veges; $19). Mine was nice in a chicken stir-fry kind of way. Not too laden with exotic adventurous flavours but maybe it wasn’t meant to be. Maverick’s unfortunately was rather inedible. Far far hotter than medium and smelled and tasted rather funny. Not nice. Luckily the serving sizes were such that there was more than enough of my dish for two.
Overall we weren’t overawed by the Thai Village food. Apart from the soup, which was excellent, the offerings ranged from the passable to the inedible. The service throughout was professional and fast and the servings were reasonable value for money. Thai Village is done out in authentic style (in a Las Vegas sort of way) with groups of “huts” which would be great for those rowdy work-dos where each person brings their own bottle of wine. From our experience though, this is probably not the best place in Hamilton if you’re looking for great Thai cuisine.
Overall: Recommended for group functions. Beware of their "hotness scale".
Anonymous, 8 November 2001 (3 stars). Good atmostphere. Lots of whole fish meals, and a good sized, often changed menu. Tad expensive compared to other Thai restaurants. Some meals good and some not.
